The Ordinary

Memory Verse:

“And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.” Matthew 17:2

Who doesn’t desire to have a “mountain top” experience with Jesus? He will grant such an time with Him as He wills. We must be aware that we live in a day in which the pursuit of the “mountain top” is far too consuming. Many children of God even have the idea that anything short of the “mountain top” equals a falling short and failing in their relationship with God. Yet, Christ is most often found in the ordinary of life. In a world of superlatives, we cannot lose sight of knowing Jesus while doing laundry, fixing a leaking faucet, teaching our children, balancing the check book, or any such commonplace task that marks ordinary people. Christ wants to be found in the everyday distractions and practices of life rather than a relentless pursuit of the awesome, the trend-setting, the ground breaking, the marvelous, and magnificent.

 Prayer points:

  • Jesus, help me to find You in the ordinary. Help me to resist the temptation that unless my life is used to change the world I have somehow failed. Let me find you in my daily routine of the life you have called me to fulfill.

"How do I Trust?"

"How Do I Trust"

Memory Verse

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6

What a wonderful promise we have in this text. It promises that if we trust in the Lord while suspending our own understanding and resisting the temptation to go our own way then He will be our guide. We can experience times in which we must honestly pause after the first phrase of verse five, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart”. We should not consider this a given. It’s not automatic especially when we read the “…with all your heart” part. What does it mean and what does it look like to trust the Lord with all your heart? Many need to spend more time learning how to trust the Lord before we can move on to the benefits of that trust. Grace is required in this quest and God will abundantly provide this grace of trust if we seek Him.

 Prayer points:

  • Gracious Father, I confess that I struggle to trust You with all my heart. I know You are worthy, faithful, and loving and there is no good reason I have for not trusting in You completely. Yet I struggle. Help me to learn greater trust.

Weeding Out Idols

Weeding Out Idols

“And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, ‘You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven, and come, follow me.’”  Mark 10:21

In this conversation between Jesus and a rich young man, we see the stronghold of material possessions. When asked to loosen his grip on his possessions, the rich man made a horrible decision. He calculated that treasure on earth was more important than following the Son of God. He choose the temporal over the eternal. Jesus, knowing that this man was in bondage to his money, began to root out this idol. This young man did not believe the words of God. Has the Lord targeted an idol in your life? Chances are great that if you are walking with Him daily He is addressing idolatry and pride in your life. Listen to Him. Jettison all objects in your life that are hindering your walk with Him.

Prayer points:

  • Oh Lord, take my life and weed out anything that is unpleasant to You. Give me a trusting and obedient heart that will joyfully lay down all the stumbling blocks in my life. Help me to follow You fully.
