Speak Grace to Others

main image

Memory verse for this week:

“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” Ephesians 4:29

Talk that gives grace to those who hear flows from the heart that is filled with the Holy Spirit. Through the indwelling of the Spirit our words will be kind to one another. Our speech will come from a tender heart as we forgive others (v.32). The battle for words is fought with spiritual weapons and is only won by the Spirit who fills us. Verse thirty gives the imperative, “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God…” When the Spirit is grieved our words reflect His interrupted influence by speaking bitterly towards others. Angry words and slander are not a fruit of the Spirit (v.30). Through understanding the forgiveness we have in Christ we are enabled to speak grace even to those who despise us.

Prayer points for today:

  1. Is there anyone whom you need to forgive and speak grace to?
  2. Thank the Lord for Spirit empowered words of life.

Building Up

Memory verse for this week:

“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” Ephesians 4:29

Words are like building blocks. They are intended to be used to bless others and not bash them. The one who constantly belittles others is the one who has an unbiblical view not only of who they are in Christ but also who the person they belittle is in Christ. Some make a practice out of tearing others down with words and then suspiciously they set themselves up as the only one who can save the day or fix the problem or with the best idea. The people of God who are trusting in Christ should always build up one another in love. Paul said in Philippians 2:3, “Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”

Prayer points for today:

  1. Look for ways to build up each other with your words.
  2. Give praise to God for other people.

Unwholesome Talk

Memory verse for this week:

“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” Ephesians 4:29

Some translations use the word “unwholesome”. Kenneth Wuest translates the first part of this verse, “Every word that is rotten and unfit for use…” must not proceed out of your mouth. If the words that came out of your mouth was a picture what would the picture look like? Would the picture be of rotten food that is unfit to be eaten? Or would the picture of your words be a seven course meal that brings pleasure to everyone? The Scripture instructs us to keep close tabs on our words because words reflect the spiritual condition of our hearts. Corrupting or unwholesome words to other people whether in person or in private can do great damage. Be aware of how your words affect others.

Prayer points for today:

  1. Ask the Lord to help you manage your words.
  2. Pray for those who use words as weapons.
