The Pursuit of Possessions

The Pursuit of Possessions

Memory Verse

“And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, ‘You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.’” Mark 10:21

A very wealthy man approached Jesus and asked what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus could see the error in his question. There is nothing you can “do” to inherit eternal life. To prove that to the rich man, Jesus placed the measuring rod of God’s righteous requirements, which is the Ten Commandments, beside this man and asked him how he measured up. The rich man said he had kept all the requirements of righteousness. Sadly, the majority of people are depending on their own righteousness to earn eternal life. Note that Jesus looked at the rich man and “loved him”. Nothing moves the heart of God more than people. Jesus told the man to sell everything to show that he was in love, not with Christ, but with his possessions. He would not let go of his treasure in order to follow Jesus. What are you holding on to that is preventing you from following Christ?

 Prayer point:

  • Gracious Lord, examine my heart and my pursuit of possessions and show me that worldly wealth is empty. Help me to follow You by denying myself and using whatever means You give me to glorify Your name.

Rest in Him

"Rest In Him"

Memory Verse

“Say among the nations, ‘The LORD reigns! Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity.’” Psalm 96:10

What thoughts occupy your mind? What worries steal your restful night’s sleep? What circumstances are currently causing you stress and robbing you of joy? This passage reminds us that no matter what is going on in our lives the Lord reigns. Conflict, disappointments and setbacks do not hinder God’s rule and control. What we think has derailed or been delayed is right on schedule with God. The world is already established and it will never be moved. His plan is set. What we see as major problems in the world will be perfectly taken care of by the everlasting God. Rest in knowing that He sits enthroned over the world and our lives, homes, and churches.

 rayer point:

  • Sovereign Lord, help me to see my problems from Your eternal perspective. Give me an understanding that You are in control and I can rest. Let my sleep be sweet and refreshing as I trust in You.

A Time to Trust

A Time to Trust

Memory Verse

“For we are powerless against this great horde that is coming against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.” 2 Chronicles 20:12

Thomas Lye (d. 1864) said, “Times of adversity are seasonable times to trust in God. When we have no bread to eat, or water to drink, but only afflictions and astonishments, this is a time not for over-grieving, murmuring, sinking, desponding, despairing, but for trusting. This is the time to stir up your faith.” We all face various sorts of adversity. When it seems as though you will be crushed by the “great horde” the temptation can be to withdraw and hide. Yet that is exactly the moment God has been training you for. God prepares each of His children for the day of adversity. Keep your eyes on Jesus. Cast all your worries upon Him. The times of our powerlessness are the times the power of God is most clearly seen if we will only trust.

 Prayer point:

  • Heavenly Father, You know exactly what I am facing. Strengthen my faith for the task at hand. Help me to keep my eyes on You by trusting in your power and attributes to be glorified in all situations.
