The Pursuit of Possessions
“And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, ‘You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.’” Mark 10:21
A very wealthy man approached Jesus and asked what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus could see the error in his question. There is nothing you can “do” to inherit eternal life. To prove that to the rich man, Jesus placed the measuring rod of God’s righteous requirements, which is the Ten Commandments, beside this man and asked him how he measured up. The rich man said he had kept all the requirements of righteousness. Sadly, the majority of people are depending on their own righteousness to earn eternal life. Note that Jesus looked at the rich man and “loved him”. Nothing moves the heart of God more than people. Jesus told the man to sell everything to show that he was in love, not with Christ, but with his possessions. He would not let go of his treasure in order to follow Jesus. What are you holding on to that is preventing you from following Christ?
- Gracious Lord, examine my heart and my pursuit of possessions and show me that worldly wealth is empty. Help me to follow You by denying myself and using whatever means You give me to glorify Your name.
