It Is Finished

It Is Finished

Memory Verse

“When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, ‘It is finished,’ and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” John 19:30

The verb translated “finished” also appears in verse 28 of this same chapter in declaring, “After this, Jesus knowing that all was now finished…” The word literally means “accomplished”, “completed”, or “coming to an end”. The death of Jesus Christ on the cross completed His task for entering into the world which was to “…seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10). At that moment the atoning work of Christ accomplished the full payment for our sins. Having completed His task, Jesus gave up his spirit. He voluntarily submitted to death (Phil. 2:8). This is important…Jesus did not submit to death until He was ready. Death did not take Him or overpower Him. He controlled the timing of His death so that death would not come before all was finished.

 Prayer point:

  • Gracious Lord, You are the Sovereign Master over death. In You is the reign of life for anyone who will call out to You for salvation. Renew my trust in Your power and love and give me a burden for my neighbors.

Self-Control

Self-Control

Memory Verse

“…that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God;” 1 Thessalonians 4:4

The fruit of the Spirit is self-control (Gal. 5:23). Yet our flesh desires that which is opposed to the longing of the Spirit. Victory over the desires of the flesh come as you are filled with the Holy Spirit. Do not entertain the idea that self-control is not important as long as no one is getting hurt. These passions wage war against the work of Christ in your life and in the lives of those you influence. The great deception from the enemy is that controlling your body impedes upon your freedom. Yet the truth is just the opposite. Sin places you in a prison. Truth will set you free. A clear conscience will set you free. Obedience to the promptings of the Spirit will set you free. Fill your mind with His Word and be free from the bondage of sin.

 Prayer point:

Lord help me to flood my mind and activity with the power and authority of your Word. Help me to surrender to You and trust in Your life-giving Spirit.

His Work In You

His Work In You

“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” Philippians 1:6

The work of God should produce a great level of assurance and thankfulness in your life. We have this confidence that God has never started something without finishing. The work spoken of here is the ongoing task of sharing the gospel and extending to His work of molding each of His children into the image of His Son. God’s Spirit is at work in your life governing and orchestrating each detail of life with a great purpose. God is working. He is active. Thus, we can rest in all circumstances knowing that God, in His infinite love and power, is at work in your life. As Christians under construction, we will not remain under construction. The day will come in which His work is completed.

 Prayer point:

  • Lord, help me to understand that You will never abandon Your work in my life. Let this truth bring me strength and encouragement.
