4 Ingredients for Effective Prayer

George Mueller said, “It is not enough to begin to pray, nor to pray aright; nor is it enough to continue for a time to pray; but we must patiently, believingly, continue in prayer until we obtain an answer.”

1.  Pray Patiently: Many of us simply give up too easily in our prayers. We begin well but we fall prey to our “instant gratification” society.

2.  Pray Believingly: We honor God by bringing the impossible to Him. The size of our prayers reflects the size of our God.

3.  Pray Continually: Yes, time set aside for quiet prayer is important. But don’t forget that the Lord is with you every moment. Bring spontaneous praise, worship, and requests to God throughout the day.

4.   Pray Until…: Don’t stop praying until the Lord answers. The opposite is also important…when He answers, stop praying. Or better put, begin to pray that you can be faithful with His answer.

March 30-Day Tithing Challenge; pt.4

Memory Verse

“…God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:7

Pastor and author, David Jeremiah, stated, “Giving God’s way can be – should be – a hilarious  experience.” Paul wrote to the Corinthians to encourage them to give from the heart. The Greek word he used for “cheerful” is hilaros. If that word looks a little familiar to you it’s because we get our word “hilarious” from this Greek word. Paul’s use of this word does not mean we should LOL every time we give. Rather it describes the heart of the Christian giving to God with a heart of gladness. One could say that giving to God should be pure joy. It should be with a positive attitude because there will be a great outcome when we obey God.

March is our month for the 30-Day Tithe challenge. If you are not currently giving a tithe (10%) to the church, use this month to test God (Malachi 3:10).

 Prayer Points:

  • Heavenly Father, help me to have the right attitude when I give. Let me give with a smile on my face because You are the everlasting God with abundant treasure and I can never out-give You.

Memory Verse:

“Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes and contributions.” Malachi 3:8

A study published in 2008 calculated what funds could be generated for ministry and missions. “In Passing the Plate: Why American Christians Don’t Give Away More Money, Christian Smith, Michael O. Emerson, and Patricia Snel analyzed the average annual income of Christians in the United States who were committed enough to their faith to attend church services at least twice a month and calculated that in the year 2005, that group earned in excess of two trillion dollars. Based on that extraordinary number and comparing it to the amount already contributed to charitable causes annually by that same group, research showed that a tithe of after-tax income would result in an additional $46 billion per year in giving.” (Horner).

In other words, if those Christians who are only half-way committed to their faith (attend church at least twice a month) would tithe, there would be an additional $46 billion that could be used in missions and ministry. Just imaging if those Christians who are fully committed (by church attendance) to their faith would tithe, how much ministry and mission could be accomplished in our community and in the world.

 Prayer Points:

  • Gracious Lord, draw me to greater faithfulness to You in my giving. Remind me that wealth is measured more in what I give away than what I keep for myself.
