Unwholesome Talk

main image

Memory verse for this week:

“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” Ephesians 4:29

Some translations use the word “unwholesome”. Kenneth Wuest translates the first part of this verse, “Every word that is rotten and unfit for use…” must not proceed out of your mouth. If the words that came out of your mouth was a picture what would the picture look like? Would the picture be of rotten food that is unfit to be eaten? Or would the picture of your words be a seven course meal that brings pleasure to everyone? The Scripture instructs us to keep close tabs on our words because words reflect the spiritual condition of our hearts. Corrupting or unwholesome words to other people whether in person or in private can do great damage. Be aware of how your words affect others.

Prayer points for today:

  1. Ask the Lord to help you manage your words.
  2. Pray for those who use words as weapons.

Sing Praises

Memory verse for this week:

“Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! Sing to him; sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works!” 1 Chronicles 16:8,9

How often do you sing to the Lord? One can participate in music at church on Sunday mornings and still not sing to the Lord. Paul says in Ephesians 5:18,19 to “…be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart.” Therefore it is quite possible that moving our lips in rhythm to the music on Sundays is not singing to the Lord at all. Singing praises to God is a work of the Holy Spirit. This great work can occur at any time. We can truly sing in our morning devotion times or before bed time and any time in between. This song reflects a grateful heart that personally knows his wondrous works.

Prayer points for today:

  1. How long has it been since you have really sang to the Lord?
  2. Give Him praise morning, noon and night.

Memory verse for this week:

“Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! Sing to him; sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works!” 1 Chronicles 16:8,9

In these two short verses we are told twice to make his deeds known and to tell of his wondrous works. God’s glory is displayed through creation. His will is made known through His inerrant Word. Yet He has entrusted to us the honor and responsibility to tell others about Him. The sun, moon and stars do indeed “speak” but their speech pales in comparison with us giving testimony of how we know God intimately and have known by the experience of everyday life that His works are truly wondrous. He has not entrusted this testimony to the beasts, birds or even the angels for no other creation can speak of the glorious gospel of our blessed God like you and me. So let us tell others.

 Prayer points for today:

  1. Who can you tell about His deeds and works?
  2. Thank Him for His wondrous deeds that continually amaze you.
