”…that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God…” 1 Thessalonians 4:4-5
Paul, writing to the Thessalonians, is explaining to them how they ought to live (4:1). They are to live in such a way that pleases God. One way to live as to please God is to practice self-control. The fruit of the Spirit is self-control. This self-control is practiced when a person denies himself what his flesh wants because it does not promote holiness. Self-control is the governor placed on our actions that properly slows or perhaps even stops an act or thought. A child of God should never “throw caution to the wind”. The world says to live life to the fullest because this is the only life you have. Christ says, on the other hand, to live life for the eternal world to come by practicing self-control in this world.
- Gracious Lord, help me to understand that I loose nothing by denying my flesh temporary pleasures. Help me to instead look to You and trust You to care for me and to meet all my needs.
